44 Lawmakers Petition President Tinubu for Nnamdi Kanu’s Release and Political Dialogue

44 federal lawmakers from across northern and southern Nigeria have jointly written to President Bola Tinubu, urging him to release Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) leader Nnamdi Kanu from detention. The lawmakers, operating under the banner of Concerned Federal Lawmakers, also called for the convening of an all-inclusive political roundtable to address national challenges and pursue a lasting resolution to tensions in the Southeast.

In their two-page letter and accompanying resolution, the legislators requested that President Tinubu direct the Attorney General of the Federation to discontinue Kanu’s prosecution. They argued that halting the trial and initiating constructive dialogue would promote national reconciliation, ease regional tensions, and foster a durable political solution.

The letter, signed by representatives from diverse parties and ethnic groups, emphasized the importance of national unity and appealed for the President’s urgent attention. It reads in part: “Driven by the urgent need for national reconciliation and healing…we request that Mazi Nnamdi Kanu’s prosecution be discontinued and a constructive dialogue begun to achieve a just political settlement.”

The lawmakers concluded by expressing confidence in President Tinubu’s judgment and urged swift action on the matter.
