Wike vs military: I can’t be intimidated – FCT minister orders halt to alleged illegal development
The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, has strongly condemned the alleged forceful takeover of a disputed parcel of land in Abuja by soldiers said to be acting under the instructions of a former Chief of Naval Staff.
Wike, who visited the site on Tuesday, described the soldiers’ actions as “lawless and unacceptable,” after reports surfaced that they had chased away officials of the Federal Capital Territory Administration (FCTA) enforcing development control directives.
He emphasized that no individual—regardless of their former position—would be allowed to intimidate government officials or obstruct the enforcement of the law.
“When this was brought to my attention, I instructed that no activity should take place there since there were no valid documents—no regional approval, no legal acquisition,” Wike said. “It’s unfortunate that someone who once held such a top military position would resort to intimidation rather than due process.”
According to the minister, those occupying the land could not produce any legal documents when asked by the Department of Development Control. “How can we continue to allow lawlessness to prevail? What about ordinary Nigerians who don’t have the military behind them?” he queried.
Wike disclosed that he had spoken with the Chief of Defence Staff and the Chief of Naval Staff, who assured him that the matter would be resolved. “We’re not here to create chaos,” he said, “but I will not allow this to continue. The law must apply equally to everyone.”
He reaffirmed his commitment to restoring order and accountability in Abuja’s land administration, warning that the FCTA would continue to reclaim encroached areas irrespective of who is involved.
