Because we rejected the strange proposal – APC chieftain makes claims to reason Trump declared Nigeria country of particular concern
A chieftain of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Ayekooto Akindele, has claimed that former U.S. President Donald Trump’s decision to label Nigeria a “Country of Particular Concern” was retaliation for Nigeria’s refusal to accept a “strange proposal” from the U.S.
Trump had placed Nigeria on a watch list, citing alleged killings of Christians by extremists, a claim the Nigerian government has strongly denied, insisting the country’s security challenges are not religiously motivated.
Reacting via X on Saturday, Akindele suggested that Trump’s move was politically motivated, linking it to Nigeria’s rejection of U.S. demands to repatriate illegal immigrants and its pursuit of independent economic partnerships with global organizations.
He wrote, “Donald Trump, Nigeria is not a country to mess with. We are multi-religious and multi-cultural. A country where the President is a Muslim and his wife is a Pastor should tell you more about our lives here. Do you want to rescue the First Lady from her Husband?
“And you know we are a country of particular concern, yet you attempted to deport illegal immigrants of other nations to this country but because we rejected the strange proposal, and also decided to pursue economic liberties with every global economic organisation, we suddenly became your country of concern!”
