Lagos Is the “Yoruba United States” Leading Nigeria’s Renewal – Sanwo-Olu

Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu has described Lagos as a “Yoruba United States”, a symbol of diversity, unity, and progress that continues to lead Nigeria’s development.

Speaking on Wednesday at the South-West Citizen-Government Engagement Summit in Akure, Ondo State, Sanwo-Olu said Lagos embodies the strength and inclusiveness of the Yoruba nation while remaining Nigeria’s economic powerhouse.

“Lagos stands as a Yoruba United States, a state that continues to reinvent itself and set the pace for the nation,” he said.

Sanwo-Olu urged South-West leaders to drive Nigeria’s renewal through unity and collaboration, commending the creation of the South-West Development Commission — a Tinubu-backed initiative — as a platform to revive regional growth akin to the Awolowo era.

He praised President Bola Tinubu’s reforms, saying they are restoring investor confidence and driving national stability.

“Under President Tinubu’s leadership, Nigeria is regaining stability and optimism. His reforms are working, the economy is growing, and investment is returning,” he noted.

Highlighting major Lagos projects like the Fourth Mainland Bridge, Green Line Rail, and Lekki International Airport, Sanwo-Olu reaffirmed the region’s leadership role, declaring:

“The South-West can, and must, lead Nigeria’s renewal. The spirit of innovation and courage that shaped our past still lives within us today.”
