”We must protect voters, prevent political violence or risk a worse situation that Nepal’s recent unrest” – Political Activist, Timi Frank
Political activist and former Deputy National Publicity Secretary of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Timi Frank, has emphasized the importance of credible elections ahead of Nigeria’s 2027 general elections. Speaking in Abuja, Frank warned that failure to implement essential reforms could spark unrest reminiscent of Nepal’s political turmoil.
He urged the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to take decisive steps to ensure free, fair, and credible elections, stressing that without urgent reforms and ethical leadership from electoral and security institutions, Nigeria risks heightened violence and political instability akin to the #EndSARS protests of 2020.
Frank also called on international actors, including former US President Donald Trump, to pressure the Nigerian government, particularly INEC and the National Assembly, to prioritize electoral reforms. “Without these reforms, free and fair elections in 2027 cannot be guaranteed,” he said.
Additionally, Frank advocated for the appointment of a new INEC chairman with proven integrity, noting that the tenure of Mahmood Yakubu is nearing its end.
He said: “Let the US impose stiffer sanctions on judges, justices and INEC officials that may compromise the electoral process because we believe and support Donald Trump’s position on enthroning true democracy across Africa.
“Security agencies must be unbiased and stop their usual role in rigging elections for the ruling party.
“They must protect voters and prevent political violence. Failure to do so risks pushing Nigeria into a situation worse than Nepal’s recent unrest, given our challenges with poverty and tyranny.”
