Nigerian Citizenship: Aunty Kemi, why this continuous, dangerous, and desperate attempt to malign Nigeria? – Presidential aide, Dada Olusegun, knocks Kemi Badenoch
Presidential aide Dada Olusegun has criticized UK Conservative Party leader and Business Secretary, Kemi Badenoch, over her recent remarks on Nigerian citizenship, accusing her of misrepresenting the country’s laws.
In a CNN interview, Badenoch claimed she couldn’t pass Nigerian citizenship to her children because of her gender, a statement Olusegun dismissed as false and misleading. Responding via X, he said Badenoch, who was born in the UK to Nigerian parents and spent part of her childhood in Lagos, was spreading misinformation.
According to Nigerian law, a child born abroad is entitled to citizenship if either parent is Nigerian by birth, regardless of gender. Gender distinctions in Nigerian citizenship laws primarily affect foreign spouses, not children.
Responding to this, Dada wrote; “Aunty @KemiBadenoch, why do you continue to lie against your motherland? Why this continuous, dangerous, and desperate attempt to malign Nigeria?” he wrote.
“This holds regardless of the father’s nationality. You do not need to apply for registration or naturalisation for her child to be a citizen,” he added.
