State of North Carolina declares June 14, 2025 as “Igbo day”

The state of North Carolina has officially designated June 14, 2025, as “Igbo Day” to recognize and celebrate the contributions of the Igbo community from Nigeria’s southeast region.

Governor Josh Stein made the proclamation on June 12, noting that the Igbo people have been part of North Carolina’s social and economic landscape for over 50 years. He praised their achievements in education, law, medicine, IT, public service, and entrepreneurship, and commended their efforts in community service, including volunteering, supporting shelters, and cultural engagement.

The proclamation described the Igbo community as a beacon of unity, cultural pride, and civic engagement, dedicated to preserving their heritage for future generations. North Carolina now joins Minnesota in formally honoring the Igbo people with a state-recognized day.
