Uphold the rule of law and protect the rights of every citizen – President Tinubu tells Nigerian police
President Bola Tinubu has delivered a strong warning to Nigerian police officers, cautioning them against intimidating or abusing the citizens they are employed to safeguard.
He emphasized the critical need for them to uphold the rule of law and reject any form of misconduct.
This warning was issued during the 2nd Annual Inspector General of Police’s (IGP) Award and Commendation Ceremony, held on Wednesday night in Abuja, where the President was represented by Senate President Godswill Akpabio
The president said: “Be reminded that the power you wield is not for intimidation but for protection. It is not for abuse but for service.”
“You must be guided by the highest standards of accountability and professionalism.”
“Uphold the rule of law, protect the rights of every citizen, and reject all forms of misconduct and corruption.”
“Only then can we build a police force that is truly respected and trusted by the people it serves.”
President Tinubu further stated that the Federal Government remains committed to its part in improving the police force. He urged every police officer, regardless of their rank or assignment, to honor the significant trust placed in them by the Nigerian populace.
He affirmed that the government would continue to invest in providing cutting-edge equipment, technological support, capacity-building programs, and welfare schemes. These initiatives are designed to enhance operational efficiency and boost morale throughout the police ranks.
