I cannot be threatened as a Governor. my comments are intended to express genuine concerns – Bauchi Governor Replies Presidency

Bauchi State Governor Bala Mohammed has stood by his criticism of President Bola Tinubu’s proposed tax reforms, rejecting the Presidency’s demand for a retraction.

In an interview during Channels Television’s 2024 Year-End Review, Mohammed stated, “I cannot be threatened as a governor. My comments are not intended to insult but to express genuine concerns.”

As Chair of the Peoples Democratic Party Governors’ Forum, Mohammed accused the Presidency of arrogance and urged federal authorities to consider Nigerians’ concerns. He warned that the proposed tax reforms could harm state economies and deepen poverty, calling the approach “undemocratic” and lacking public consultation.

The governor also criticized regional inequalities in the reforms, arguing they disproportionately benefit certain areas while neglecting others. Previously, he described the tax bills as potential “calls for anarchy” and hinted at a strong northern response if the legislation were enacted.
