Federal High Court orders CBN to halt financial allocations to Rivers State
In a recent ruling, Justice Joyce Abdulmalik of the Federal High Court in Abuja has ordered the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) to halt all financial allocations to the Rivers State Government until a lawful appropriation act is passed by a duly constituted House of Assembly.
This ruling, delivered on Wednesday, October 30, follows a suit filed by the Rivers State House of Assembly led by Martins Amaewhule. Justice Abdulmalik stated that Governor Siminalayi Fubara’s decision to present the 2024 Appropriation Bill to an Assembly with only four members, deemed improperly constituted, was not legally acceptable.
The judgment arrives amid a tense political climate in Rivers State, marked by an ongoing crisis between Governor Fubara and his predecessor, Nyesom Wike. This development now puts a hold on state funding until constitutional order is restored in the Assembly.
