I am going to interrogate people for the kind of negative publicity that we had at the Olympics, heads will roll if possible – Sports Minister, Enoh says
Minister of Sports Development John Enoh has warned that there will be repercussions if the investigation reveals that some government officials were responsible for Nigeria’s lack of medals at the 2024 Paris Olympics.
Appearing on Channels Television’s Politics Today programme on Wednesday, August 14, the minister stated that all issues related to the games would be thoroughly examined. He also called for comprehensive reforms in the country’s various sporting federations to enhance sports development.
He also apologized to Nigerians for the disappointing performance in Paris and attributed the lackluster results to the leadership of the sporting federations. He stressed the importance of establishing effective systems and structures within the federations to ensure that Nigeria fields the best athletes and secures medals in future competitions.
He said: “All of those things, I am going to engage, I am going to interrogate. You don’t fire unless you interrogate. I have always stated my determination that I am not going to allow things to lie low; I am going to take them up one by one.”
When asked if heads would roll, the minister said, “Well, if that is what it takes; if my findings and interrogations get to that point that people become liable, people become responsible, for the kind of negative publicity that we had at the Olympics, why not?”
