ASUU: During my time, teachers and lecturers bought cars and houses – Obasanjo

Former President Olusegun Obasanjo has disclosed that during his tenure as president, lecturers and teachers all had jumbo bonuses and started buying houses and cars

He said this following the issues surrounding the Academic Staff Union of Universities, ASUU strike

He said teachers christened the jumbo allowance as “Gbemu Aremu”.

Mr Obasanjo’s middle name is Aremu, while ‘Gbemu’ is a Yoruba word that means windfall.

He shared this this on Tuesday while speaking at the Education summit the House of Representatives organised.

He said: “In my time, we had it. And if any government had done anything for ASUU, my government did. They all started buying cars and building houses. Even primary schools teachers started buying cars. They called it ‘Gbemu Aremu

He further stated that Nigeria must end the high out-of-school children before they become the next Boko Haram.
