Awoniyi Faces Potential FA Sanction Over Religious Goal Celebration

Nottingham Forest striker Taiwo Awoniyi is under scrutiny by the English Football Association (FA) following a religious display during his team’s 3-0 victory over Tottenham Hotspur on Sunday, March 22, 2026. The 28-year-old Nigerian international, who came off the bench to score the final goal in the 87th minute, celebrated by removing his match jersey to reveal an undershirt.

The undershirt bore the message “God is the greatest,” a personal expression of faith that has sparked debate over the intersection of sports and religious expression. While Awoniyi received an immediate yellow card from referee Michael Oliver for removing his shirt—a standard caution under FIFA rules—he now faces the possibility of further disciplinary action for the content of the message itself.

Under Law 4 of the International Football Association Board (IFAB), which governs player equipment, participants are strictly prohibited from displaying political, religious, or personal slogans. The regulation states: “Equipment must not have any political, religious or personal slogans, statements or images. Players must not reveal undergarments that show political, religious, personal slogans, statements or images.”

The FA is expected to review the match report to determine if a formal charge is warranted. Historically, football authorities have differentiated between political and religious messages, often treating the latter with more leniency. Consequently, many experts believe Awoniyi may escape with a formal warning or a minor fine rather than a suspension.

This incident has drawn comparisons to recent cases where players were reminded of these regulations after using equipment to broadcast personal beliefs. For Awoniyi, the goal was his second of the season and a significant contribution to Forest’s fight against relegation, though the celebration has momentarily shifted the focus from his on-field performance to the rulebook.

Awoniyi later shared his convictions on social media, framing the moment in spiritual terms despite the looming regulatory investigation. As Nottingham Forest continues its survival battle in the Premier League, the club now awaits the FA’s decision on whether their star forward will face additional consequences for his “faith-driven” celebration.
