Outrage Grips X Over “Rape Festival” Allegations in Delta State
Social media has been set ablaze following disturbing reports of organized sexual assaults against women during a traditional festival in Ozoro, Delta State. Using the hashtag #StopRapingWomen, thousands of users have called for the immediate abolition of cultural practices that facilitate gender-based violence, with many demanding swift intervention from the Delta State Government.
The controversy erupted after videos surfaced online allegedly showing men assaulting women under the guise of ritual rites. X user Moyosoreoluwa expressed the collective frustration of many, questioning how such acts could persist in 2026: “Stop raping women!!!! What is the delta state government even doing about this? How long has this been going on in Ozoro, delta state??”
Critics have also slammed the “not all men” and “false accuser” narratives often used to deflect from systemic violence. User Tegbe! pointed out the hypocrisy of silence during communal atrocities, stating, “Now there’s a whole ass festival dedicated to raping women… you’re quiet because you’re still investigating the videos with forensics abi?”
The debate has further highlighted the clash between modern human rights and harmful traditions. Activists like Nze argued that any culture tampering with basic rights “needs to die,” while others pointed out the irony of participants who balance these violent rites with religious identities. “They’ll go to church but choose to do ritual rites… all because it’s an opportunity to cause harm to women,” noted user SABINA.
Responding to the viral outcry, the Delta State Police Command spokesperson, Bright Edafe, described the reports as “alarming, disgusting, and embarrassing.” While the police have assured the public that an investigation is underway, the lack of immediate arrests as of Friday, March 20, has only fueled further anger and calls for accountability.
The Delta State Government has since issued a formal statement condemning the “barbaric” acts and promising that those found guilty will face the full weight of the law. As investigations continue, the incident has reignited a national conversation on the urgent need to protect women from traditional practices that legalize molestation and assault.
