Wiretapping Scandal: Nasir El-Rufai Faces Trial Over Alleged Cybercrimes

The immediate past governor of Kaduna State, Malam Nasir Ahmad El-Rufai, is set to be arraigned today before the Federal High Court in Abuja.

He faces three count charges brought by the Department of State Services (DSS) regarding alleged complicity in cybercrimes and breaches of the Communications Act.

The charges follow a recent television interview where the former governor allegedly admitted to intercepting phone communications of the National Security Adviser (NSA), Nuhu Ribadu.

“That you… did admit during the interview that you and your cohorts unlawfully intercepted the phone communications of the National Security Adviser, Nuhu Ribadu,” the first count states.

The second count alleges he failed to report the individuals involved: “You know and relate with certain individual, who unlawfully intercepted the Phone Communications… without reporting the said individual to relevant Security agencies.”

A third count accuses him of using technical systems that compromised national security: “You… did use technical equipment or systems which compromised public safety… to which you admitted during an interview on 13th February, 2026.”

Heavy security has currently taken control of the court premises as Justice Joyce Abdulmalik prepares for the arraignment, which has drawn a massive crowd of political followers.
