Those behind assassination attempt on me, Peter Obi playing with fire – John Oyegun
Former Edo State Governor John Odigie-Oyegun has issued a stern warning, stating that those behind the attack on himself and Peter Obi are “playing with fire.”
The APC chieftain and ADC stakeholder cautioned that such reckless political violence could trigger devastating national consequences far beyond what the perpetrators currently imagine.
The assault occurred in Benin City during an event marking Olumide Akpata’s defection to the ADC, where gunmen reportedly invaded the venue and opened fire.
“I fear that our leaders, both nationally and within this state, are acting recklessly. The repercussions could be devastating—far beyond what many imagine,” Oyegun stated.
He revealed that the gathering ended abruptly after security intelligence warned of an imminent hit, narrowly avoiding a mass casualty event before the shooters arrived.
“We quickly ended the event, and it seems we narrowly avoided disaster. Shortly after we left, chaos erupted. About ten vehicles drove in, and gunfire rang out,” he recounted.
Oyegun further condemned the lack of security synergy, asking: “In a state with a sitting governor, isn’t the primary duty of government the protection of its people?”
