Sowore Confronts Minister Umahi Over N250m Debt and illegal Detention of Woman
Human rights activist Omoyele Sowore on Wednesday confronted the Minister of Works, David Umahi, at the FCT Police Command over the “unlawful” detention of a private citizen.
Sowore alleged that the minister is using the police to settle a personal score with Tracy Nither Nicolas Ohiri, a woman who claims Umahi owes her N250 million.
The activist stated that Ohiri was arrested in Lagos on cyberbullying charges and flown to Abuja, despite the matter being a civil dispute lasting over 12 years.
“Today at the FCT Command… I confronted the Minister of Works, David Umahi inside a conference room where police operatives had effectively set up shop for him to harass a woman,” Sowore said.
He accused the police of facilitating an environment where the minister could “threaten, intimidate, and denigrate” the woman within the official facility before the confrontation occurred.
“After Umahi left, they refused to grant her bail or release her, we later learnt Umahi promised that she’s not seen anything on his way out,” Sowore added.
Sowore insisted that public officials must stop weaponizing state institutions, stressing that “civil disputes must not be criminalised or weaponised through state institutions.”
