Nnamdi Kanu: Only courage can save lgboland – Activists tell Igbo monarchs to speak with one voice

A coalition of pan-Igbo self-determination groups is calling on South-East traditional rulers to end their silence regarding the marginalization of their people. The organizations—American Veterans of Igbo Descent, Ambassadors for Self-Determination, and Rising Sun Foundation—insist that only bold advocacy can protect the region’s future.

This demand follows a recent public appeal by Enugu monarch Dr. Lawrence Agubuzu, who confronted President Bola Tinubu concerning the detention of Nnamdi Kanu. During a summit in Abuja, Agubuzu urged the President to address the issue directly to ensure national progress.

The monarch’s specific plea to the President was clear and firm regarding the IPOB leader’s status. He stated, “Bring this man out. If we don’t want him in Nigeria, return him to Kenya or London where they took him from.”

Agubuzu further emphasized the necessity of honesty in governance to move the country forward. Addressing the President, he added, “Please do something about this. We cannot make progress in this country if we don’t tell ourselves the truth.”

In a joint statement, the coalition praised Agubuzu’s bravery and criticized other leaders who have remained quiet on the matter. They noted, “We unequivocally commend His Royal Majesty Eze Agubuzu of Enugu for his unflinching courage in telling President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to his face what other Igbo traditional rulers have been too weak, too compromised, or too cowardly to say: Release Onyendu Mazi Nnamdi Kanu immediately, or return him to Kenya.”

The activists argued that leadership titles are meaningless if they do not serve to protect the dignity and lives of the people. They asked, “What are the titles and crowns of these so-called leaders worth if they cannot stand for the lives, liberty, and dignity of their own people?”

The coalition concluded by demanding a unified voice from all traditional rulers to end what they describe as an era of self-serving silence. Their final warning was sharp: “Step up boldly for Onyendu Mazi Nnamdi Kanu, or step aside and make room for leaders who will.”
