Lagos DSVA withdraws as Ogun police command commences investigation into viral video of lady claiming to have been raped by an anonymous man
The Lagos State Domestic and Sexual Violence Agency (DSVA) has officially withdrawn from the investigation into the viral sexual assault allegations made by a young woman named Mirabel. This decision follows the discovery that the alleged incident took place in Ogun State, placing it outside the legal jurisdiction of the Lagos-based agency.
The case gained national attention after Mirabel shared a distressing video claiming she was assaulted by an intruder who used a razor blade to inflict injuries before the attack. In subsequent updates, she revealed she had ingested a poisonous substance, which led to a hospitalization where she was eventually revived.
Following the initial public outcry, the Lagos DSVA actively sought information to locate the survivor for intervention and prosecution of the suspect. However, in a statement released on February 18, the agency confirmed they successfully established contact with a close friend of Mirabel, who verified her discharge from the hospital.
The agency noted that because the incident occurred in Ogun State, the matter has now been officially handed over to the appropriate regional authorities. In the spirit of inter-agency collaboration, all gathered information was forwarded to the Ogun State Police Command, which has already commenced its own independent investigation.
“We sincerely appreciate members of the public who provided helpful information via our direct messages, as well as everyone who tagged the Agency to ensure swift intervention,” the DSVA stated. They expressed gratitude for the public’s role in ensuring the survivor received attention while the case transitioned to the correct jurisdiction.
The agency further expressed confidence in the ongoing police process, stating, “We understand that the Ogun State Police Command is currently handling the matter, and we trust that the survivor will fully cooperate.” This transition ensures that the legal proceedings follow the proper geographic and administrative protocols required for prosecution.
Mirabel’s story, which included her heartbreaking claim of being an orphan struggling with suicidal thoughts, continues to spark significant conversation regarding survivor protection in Nigeria. While the Lagos DSVA has stepped back, they maintain that their primary goal remains the protection and support of survivors across state lines
