Peter Obi Declares Nigeria a “Crime Scene” at Nnewi Church Summit

Former Anambra Governor Peter Obi has characterized Nigeria as a “rich country” that has been transformed into a “crime scene” by its political class. Speaking at the Church of Nigeria Anglican Communion Standing Committee Meeting in Osumenyi, Nnewi, Obi identified systemic mismanagement as the nation’s primary hurdle.

The high-level religious gathering, themed “Service to the Lord: Imperative for the Family under God,” hosted nearly all Anglican Bishops from across Nigeria. Obi used the platform to advocate for a radical shift in how public resources are allocated toward essential development.

Obi was blunt in his assessment of the current political leadership, including his own peers. “The problem of Nigeria is we, the politicians. We are the problem of the country. We spend money on frivolities leaving important institutions to rot away,” he stated.

The Labour Party leader specifically highlighted the disparity in support for educational institutions. He pointed out that while the church currently manages the state’s highest-performing schools, the government often fails to provide necessary subventions to sustain them.

Archbishop Henry C. Ndukuba, Primate of All Nigeria, also addressed the assembly, offering a measured perspective on national security. While he commended recent federal efforts, he warned that terrorism and criminal networks remain “deeply entrenched” and require a comprehensive review of combat strategies.

Governor Charles Soludo of Anambra State welcomed the visiting clergy and shared significant updates on the state’s security architecture. He revealed that his administration has successfully dismantled 62 criminal camps to date, contributing to a noticeable return of stability in the region.

The summit concluded with a unified call for ethical governance and a focus on the family unit as the foundation for societal growth. Participants emphasized the church’s ongoing role in filling the gaps left by the state in education, healthcare, and community welfare.
