Oyo Governor Makinde Agrees To Join ADC If He will Be Atiku’s Running Mate, Pledges N10billion Support — Ex-Governor Fayose Alleges
Former Ekiti State Governor Peter Ayodele Fayose has sparked a political firestorm by alleging that Oyo State Governor Seyi Makinde is preparing to dump the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP). Fayose claims Makinde has struck a deal to join the African Democratic Congress (ADC) to serve as the vice-presidential running mate to Atiku Abubakar in 2027.
The revelation came via a detailed statement on Wednesday titled, “Between Atiku and Makinde, Untold Story of What Happened in Minna Yesterday.” Fayose alleged that a secret meeting took place on Tuesday in Minna, Niger State, involving carefully selected power brokers to ensure the arrangement’s “confidence and acceptability.”
According to Fayose, the meeting’s participants concluded that Peter Obi would likely reject a vice-presidential slot and might struggle to gain traction in the North as a successor. “Consideration was given to the fact that Peter Obi will not accept to be Atiku’s running mate and he won’t also be acceptable to the North, as Atiku’s successor,” Fayose stated.
The former governor further alleged that Atiku is nearly certain to secure the ADC’s presidential ticket after influencing the party to abandon its zoning policy. He claimed the Oyo Governor’s entry into the party is contingent on a high-level guarantee. “Makinde agreed to join ADC on the condition that he will be handed the party’s Vice Presidential ticket, as Atiku’s running mate,” he wrote.
Fayose also made startling financial claims, alleging that Makinde offered a substantial financial commitment to his new political home. “Makinde offered to make available a sum of N10bn (to be released in two tranches), as his initial contribution towards what he called ‘proper take-off of the ADC,’ and make additional funds available when the campaign begins,” he disclosed.
The statement suggested that Makinde promised to use his political influence in the South-West and his wife’s roots in the South-South to fracture the ruling party’s base. Fayose quoted the governor’s purported strategy, noting, “He posited that for the general election, using him to divide the Southwest votes will give the ADC the needed advantage.”
While Atiku Abubakar confirmed the Minna visit, he maintained the focus was strictly on strengthening ADC structures and advocating for electronic result transmission. However, Fayose insists the real agenda is far more advanced, claiming, “This is expected to be presented to Atiku’s inner caucus for further discussions and ratification,” with a follow-up meeting reportedly set for Dubai.
