Tinubu departs Abu Dhabi for Nigeria after sustainability week meeting
President Bola Tinubu has concluded his participation at the 2026 Abu Dhabi Sustainability Week (ADSW) and returned to Nigeria after spending about a week in the United Arab Emirates for high-level engagements on climate action, energy transition and international cooperation.
His departure on Saturday was confirmed by his Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, who shared a video of the President leaving his hotel in Abu Dhabi.
The summit, held from January 11 to 15, 2026 under the theme “The Nexus of Next: All Systems Go,” brought together world leaders, investors and stakeholders focused on renewable energy, climate resilience and sustainable development.
Tinubu attended at the invitation of UAE President Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, reflecting stronger Nigeria-UAE relations, especially around green energy and economic partnership.
During the event, he delivered Nigeria’s national statement, reaffirming the country’s commitment to climate action while improving energy access, creating jobs and supporting inclusion. He highlighted reforms such as the Electricity Act 2023, aimed at expanding decentralised and off-grid power solutions for underserved communities. He also stressed the role of technology, including artificial intelligence, in strengthening power systems.
A key outcome of the trip was the signing of a Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreement (CEPA) between Nigeria and the UAE on January 13, expected to boost trade, investment and cooperation in sustainable sectors.
Tinubu’s UAE visit came shortly after his end-of-year European trip where he held diplomatic talks with leaders including Rwanda’s Paul Kagame and France’s Emmanuel Macron.
