AFCON 2025: CAF opens investigation into Nigeria vs Algeria clash

The Confederation of African Football (CAF) has launched a disciplinary investigation into the chaotic scenes that erupted following Nigeria’s 2–0 victory over Algeria in the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) 2025 quarter-finals. The match, played on Saturday, January 10, 2026, at the Grand Stade de Marrakech, saw the Super Eagles advance to the semi-finals through second-half goals from Victor Osimhen and Akor Adams. However, the result was overshadowed by what CAF described as “potentially unacceptable behavior” from players, officials, and fans.

Tensions boiled over at the final whistle as Algerian players and officials reportedly confronted Senegalese referee Issa Sy and his assistants over disputed decisions. Security personnel were forced to form a protective ring around the officiating team to escort them safely off the pitch as the aggression spilled into the dugout and the tunnel. Some reports also detailed a “massive on-field brawl” that involved several Nigerian players as they attempted to celebrate their victory.

The unrest extended beyond the pitch and into the stands, where frustrated Algerian supporters reportedly attempted to breach security barriers. There were further accounts of vandalism within sections of the stadium before stewards managed to restore order. Most shockingly, CAF is also investigating a violent incident in the mixed zone, where members of the media allegedly engaged in a physical altercation involving Algerian and Moroccan journalists.

In a formal statement issued on Monday, January 12, 2026, CAF condemned all forms of inappropriate conduct, particularly those targeting referees and tournament organizers. The governing body confirmed it is currently reviewing match reports, video footage, and media evidence to identify the individuals involved. “Appropriate actions will be sought against anyone whose behavior is not consistent with professional conduct at CAF events,” the statement warned.

The investigation comes at a critical time as Nigeria prepares for a high-stakes semi-final showdown against the host nation, Morocco, in Rabat this Wednesday. In a similar development, CAF is also reviewing incidents from the Morocco vs. Cameroon quarter-final, where the Indomitable Lions were reportedly unhappy with officiating decisions. Any disciplinary measures or suspensions resulting from these probes could significantly impact the available rosters for the semi-final fixtures.

As the tournament enters its final week, the focus remains on whether the Super Eagles can overcome these distractions to secure their fourth AFCON title. For now, the football community awaits the findings of the Disciplinary Board, which are expected to be announced before the semi-final kick-off. The outcome will serve as a marker for how CAF intends to manage stadium security and player conduct during the remainder of the Morocco 2025 tournament.
