Rivers APC Rejects Impeachment Move Against Governor Fubara
The Rivers State chapter of the All Progressives Congress (APC) has strongly opposed moves by the State House of Assembly to impeach Governor Siminalayi Fubara and his deputy, warning that such action would destabilise the state government.
The party described the impeachment process as “untenable,” reacting to reports that the Rivers State House of Assembly had formally initiated proceedings against Governor Fubara. The Speaker, Martins Amaewhule, had accused the governor of gross misconduct and described his emergence as a “mistake.”
In a statement signed by APC spokesperson Darlington Nwauju, the party acknowledged the constitutional role of the legislature but insisted that impeachment was not the right approach. The APC said it could not remain silent while what it described as lingering political conflicts, allegedly carried over from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), threaten governance in the state.
Addressing concerns over the state budget, the party noted that a one-year budget approved during the period of emergency rule is valid until August 2026. It added that the governor is constitutionally allowed to continue spending into the new fiscal year and is not compelled to present a supplementary budget if satisfied with the current one.
The APC urged members of the Rivers State House of Assembly, particularly those from the party, to resist external pressure aimed at destabilising the government. It warned that internal conflicts could damage the party’s image and hinder development in the state.
The party reaffirmed its commitment to protecting the APC-led government in Rivers State and called for the immediate discontinuation of the impeachment process in the interest of democracy and stability.
