PDP Chairman Says Party Will Hold Strategic Meeting With Atiku, Peter Obi, Other Powerbrokers
The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has officially launched a high-level outreach campaign to reconcile with former heavyweights, including Peter Obi and Atiku Abubakar. This strategic move is part of a broader effort to rebuild the nation’s main opposition platform and consolidate power ahead of the 2027 general elections.
Emmanuel Ogidi, the PDP Chairman in the South-South, revealed on Wednesday that the party is currently “doing the rounds” to engage with influential national figures. He noted that the leadership has already held consultations with former presidents Olusegun Obasanjo and Ibrahim Babangida to signal that the party remains a vital force in Nigerian politics.
The party’s agenda includes specific plans to reconnect with Obi and Atiku, both of whom previously held the PDP’s electoral flags before moving to the African Democratic Congress (ADC). Ogidi emphasized the importance of these meetings, stating, “It’s all about seeing those who are important in Nigeria to tell them that we are alive and we’re moving.”
Despite the deep internal divisions that followed the 2023 polls, the leadership is determined to prove that the “PDP is the real face of democracy in Nigeria.” By reaching out to former stalwarts, the party hopes to bridge the gaps created by recent exits and present a united front against the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).
In a parallel move to solidify its base, the PDP National Working Committee recently met with former President Goodluck Jonathan in Abuja. Led by National Chairman Tanimu Turaki, the delegation sought to ensure that the party’s most prominent figures remain committed to the cause during this period of restructuring.
Following the meeting, Turaki shared that the former president provided a significant boost to their morale. Jonathan reportedly confirmed his dedication to the platform, noting that “The PDP has done enough for him, and he will try his best to do more for the party.”
The party leadership described these recent interactions as “very reassuring and encouraging” as they pivot toward upcoming off-season elections and the next general cycle. With these consultations, the PDP aims to transition from a state of crisis to a position of renewed strength on the national stage
