If Tinubu continues for another four years, Nigeria will improve — Ex-lawmaker

Senator Chris Adighije, a former lawmaker and key stakeholder in the All Progressives Congress (APC), has voiced strong support for President Bola Tinubu’s administration. Speaking in Umuahia, he asserted that a second term for Tinubu would guarantee a better future for Nigeria. He noted that the President’s current policies are already yielding results, specifically citing a perceived downward trend in the prices of food and fuel across the country.

During the event, Adighije was officially appointed as the Patron of the Ikwuano/Umuahia Initiative, a group dedicated to mobilizing grassroots support for the ruling party. He urged the people of Ikwuano and Umuahia South to align with the APC ahead of the 2027 elections to ensure they are part of the national political mainstream. He believes this alignment is essential for the region to benefit from federal initiatives and governance.

The Senator also addressed public concerns regarding the rise of a one-party system in Nigeria, firmly stating that the APC is a democratic entity. He clarified that the party does not seek to eliminate the opposition but instead welcomes those who choose to join voluntarily. “There is no way Nigeria will be a one-party country,” he remarked, emphasizing that the party believes in giving the opposition a fair opportunity to compete.

Adighije used a sinking ship metaphor, previously referenced by the President, to explain why many politicians are defecting to the APC. He suggested that as politicians recognize the direction of national progress, they naturally seek to join the winning side. However, he maintained that this influx of members is a testament to the party’s success rather than a forced consolidation of power.

Regarding the political landscape in the Southeast, Adighije pointed out that states like Abia and Anambra remain outside the APC fold for now. He expressed hope for a future shift, noting that the democratic process allows for these states to join the ruling party whenever they are ready. He stressed that the Ikwuano/Umuahia region holds the balance of power in Abia State and must lead the way.

In his new role as Patron, the Senator promised to provide leadership and advice to the group as they build a new political structure. He expressed his surprise and gratitude for the appointment, stating that he is ready to serve the interests of the Igbo people at the grassroots level. He emphasized that when eminent leaders gather and make decisions, the community follows a clear and beneficial path.

Chief Ako Atuloma, the convener of the Ikwuano/Umuahia Initiative, explained that the group’s goal is to sanitize the political process in the region. He argued that the days of politicians “buying” nominations are over, and the group will now focus on drafting credible individuals to run for office. This shift is intended to ensure that elected officials remain accountable to the constituents who drafted them.

The gathering concluded with a renewed commitment to the APC’s 2027 agenda, with leaders promising a more organized approach to local politics. By streamlining activities and identifying trustworthy candidates, the initiative seeks to strengthen the party’s presence in Abia State. Adighije’s endorsement of the President’s second term served as the central theme for this new wave of regional mobilization
