Anthony Joshua Driver Charged Over Fatal Lagos-Ibadan Expressway Crash

In a significant legal development, the Ogun State Police Command has formally arraigned 46-year-old Adeniyi Mobolaji Kayode following a tragic road accident involving boxing star Anthony Joshua. The driver appeared before the Sagamu Magistrate Court on January 2, 2026, facing a four-count charge related to the fatal crash. According to the Police Public Relations Officer, Oluseyi Babaseyi, the charges include dangerous driving causing death, reckless and negligent driving, causing bodily harm and property damage, and operating a vehicle without a valid National Driver’s Licence.

The incident occurred on Monday along the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway while Kayode was transporting Anthony Joshua and two of his associates, Latif Ayodele and Sina Ghami. The Lexus SUV driven by Kayode reportedly collided with a stationary truck, a high-impact crash that resulted in the immediate deaths of Ayodele and Ghami. While the passengers in the rear were killed, both Joshua and the driver survived the collision with minor injuries, though the emotional toll on the survivors remains profound.

Following the arraignment, the court granted the defendant bail set at ₦5,000,000, requiring two sureties to secure his release. The case has been adjourned until January 20, 2026, to allow for further legal proceedings and investigations into the specific circumstances of the collision. The police emphasized that the charges were filed in accordance with the Federal Highway Act, highlighting the severity of the alleged negligence that led to the loss of two lives.

Anthony Joshua was discharged from the hospital late Wednesday evening after medical professionals deemed him clinically fit to continue his recovery at home. Despite his injuries, the former world heavyweight champion took immediate steps to honor his friends. Reports indicate that Joshua, accompanied by his mother, visited a funeral home in Lagos on Wednesday to pay his final respects to Ayodele and Ghami.

The bodies of the two victims were being prepared for repatriation, which was scheduled to take place last night. This somber conclusion to a tragic week underscores the devastating impact of the accident on the families of the deceased and the local community. As the legal process moves forward, the focus remains on the upcoming court date and the pursuit of justice for the lives lost on the expressway
