Anthony Joshua’s driver discharged from hospital, faces prosecution for reckless driving

In a significant update to the tragic road accident involving British-Nigerian heavyweight champion Anthony Joshua, the driver of the vehicle has been discharged from the hospital and is currently facing a police investigation. The incident, which occurred on Monday, December 29, 2025, along the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway, claimed the lives of two of Joshua’s closest associates.

The driver was treated at Duchess International Hospital in Lagos—the same facility where Joshua is currently recuperating—and was released into police custody on Wednesday to provide an official statement. CSP Benjamin Hundeyin, the spokesperson for the Lagos State Police Command, confirmed the development, noting that the driver may be prosecuted for reckless driving. Meanwhile, authorities have declared the driver of the stationary truck involved in the collision wanted after he fled the scene.

Preliminary findings by the Traffic Compliance and Enforcement Agency (TRACE) in Ogun State have identified a combination of excessive speed and a mechanical failure as the primary causes of the crash. TRACE spokesman Babatunde Akinbiyi explained the sequence of events:

“From the preliminary investigation that was conducted, definitely there was overspeeding on the part of the SUV Anthony Joshua was travelling in. In the course of that, the front tyre on the passenger side burst. That led to loss of control before the vehicle now swerved and rammed into the stationary truck that was parked. There was excessive speed.”

The boxing world continues to mourn the loss of the two team members killed at the scene, identified as Sina Ghami, Joshua’s long-time strength and conditioning coach, and Latif “Latz” Ayodele, his personal trainer. Matchroom Boxing and promoter Eddie Hearn issued a statement expressing “profound sadness” over the tragedy:

“With profound sadness it has been confirmed that two close friends and team members, Sina Ghami and Latif Ayodele, have tragically passed away. With the heaviest of hearts. Two great men. Rest in eternal peace Sina and Latz. My thoughts and deepest prayers are with everyone.”

While Joshua remains in stable condition and is “responding to treatment,” family members have indicated he expects to remain under observation at the hospital until the New Year. President Bola Tinubu and other high-ranking officials have reached out to the boxer to offer condolences for the loss of his “integral” team members.
