AFCON2025: Egypt defeats South Africa to become first team to reach round of 16

Egypt has secured the first spot in the Round of 16 at the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) following a 1-0 win over South Africa in Group A on Friday.

The Pharaohs had earlier opened their campaign with a 2-1 victory against Zimbabwe. Mohamed Salah scored the lone goal against the Bafana Bafana from the penalty spot in the first half. Despite finishing the half with 10 men after Mohamed Hany received a red card, Egypt held on to claim all three points.

Egypt will face Angola in their final group match, while South Africa take on Zimbabwe.
