“It was for peace not politics” – Gov. Alex Otti speaks on why he visited Nnamdi Kanu in prison
Abia State Governor, Alex Otti, has explained that his visit to the detained leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), Nnamdi Kanu, was motivated by a desire for dialogue and peace, not political ambition.
Otti spoke on Friday at the Government House in Umuahia while receiving the leadership of the Abia Diaspora Commission and members of the state’s Global Medical Mission 2025. His comments followed criticism in a viral video questioning the motive behind his visit to Kanu.
The governor said differing opinions are part of a democratic system and do not automatically invalidate one’s actions. He stressed that his visit was aimed at fostering peace rather than pursuing personal or political gain.
Otti also dismissed speculation about future political ambitions, stating clearly that he has no intention of contesting any election after completing his tenure as governor.
“By the time I complete my tenure as governor, I will retire from public office,” he said.
