AFCON to Hold Every Four Years from 2028 – CAF President
The Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) will switch to a four-year cycle starting from 2028, ending its long-standing two-year format.
The announcement was made on Saturday by Confederation of African Football (CAF) President, Patrice Motsepe. AFCON has been held biennially since 1968, apart from a one-year gap between the 2012 and 2013 editions.
Motsepe explained that after the 2027 tournament in East Africa and the following edition in 2028, the competition will officially adopt the four-year schedule. He said the change is aimed at better aligning African football with the global football calendar.
“We have the most exciting new structure for African football,” Motsepe said, adding that the move is in the best interest of the continent.
