Over 20 Worshippers Kidnapped In Kogi ECWA Church Attack.
The security situation in Kogi State has seen a frightening escalation following a recent attack on a place of worship. On Sunday, December 14, 2025, gunmen stormed the First ECWA Church in Ayetoro Kiri, Kabba/Bunu Local Government Area, during a worship session, abducting no fewer than 20 worshippers.
Local sources confirm that the assailants opened fire to create panic among the congregants. While many worshippers managed to flee the scene, an undisclosed number were seized by the gunmen, who reportedly escaped through nearby bush paths.
The quiet community of Ayetoro Kiri was thrown into chaos, with residents reporting widespread fear and confusion. Earlier reports also indicated that one person, identified only as JayJay, was tragically killed during the attack.
This incident has significantly heightened concerns over the worsening insecurity in parts of Kogi State. Residents are increasingly anxious and demanding stronger security measures, as this marks the second attack on a church in Okun land within weeks:
• November 30, 2025: Armed men attacked a Cherubim and Seraphim Church in Ejiba, Yagba West Local Government Area. They abducted the cleric, identified as Orlando, and about 13 worshippers during the service. The attackers initially demanded a staggering ₦500 million ransom, later reducing it to ₦200 million.
Furthermore, Ayetoro Kiri itself was targeted just three weeks ago when armed assailants attacked a local school. On that occasion, the community’s vigilant efforts, led by the local vigilante group, successfully repelled the attackers, preventing casualties and abductions.
The repeated attacks on rural communities and places of worship underscore the serious security challenges facing the region.
