BREAKING: Super Eagles captain, Troost-Ekong retires few weeks before AFCON 2025
Super Eagles captain William Troost-Ekong has announced his retirement from international football after a decade of service to Nigeria.
The 31-year-old said his final appearance was the 2026 World Cup playoff loss to DR Congo. In an emotional statement, he reflected on his journey since his debut in 2015 under the late Stephen Keshi, describing it as the fulfillment of a lifelong dream.
Troost-Ekong earned 83 caps, played in five major tournaments, and won three major medals. His finest moment came at the 2023 AFCON in Côte d’Ivoire, where he captained Nigeria to the final and was named Player of the Tournament.
He said he is at peace with his decision and will remain involved in Nigerian football in another capacity.
He wrote, “Honoured. Grateful. Forever a Super Eagles.
“Playing for Nigeria has been the greatest privilege of my life.
“The journey may end here, but my support never will.
“Here’s to the next chapter”
