CAN Raises Fresh Alarm, Says Christian Genocide in Nigeria Can “No Longer Be Denied”
The Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) has renewed its warning that Christians in Northern Nigeria and the Middle Belt are facing what it calls systematic and ongoing genocide.
Speaking during CAN’s Fourth Quarterly National Executive Council meeting in Jos, Plateau State, its President, Archbishop Daniel Okoh, said the pattern of targeted killings, mass displacement, razed communities and the lack of justice shows an intentional attempt to wipe out Christian populations in affected areas.
Okoh noted that many communities have been destroyed while perpetrators remain free, victims continue to live in displacement camps, and government intervention has been slow. He pointed to his recent visit to Bokkos, where thousands of Christian families remain uprooted after repeated attacks.
He added that international organizations are now paying attention to Nigeria’s religious violence, and while painful, such scrutiny may help drive stronger government action.
CAN urged the Federal Government to urgently restore security, deliver justice, and end the ongoing killings and kidnappings. Okoh stressed that no Nigerian should face persecution because of their faith and vowed that CAN will continue to demand accountability and defend vulnerable communities.
