Opposition not behind Trump’s genocide claim – Dele Momodu
Publisher of Ovation Magazine and chieftain of the African Democratic Congress (ADC), Dele Momodu, has faulted claims that the Nigerian opposition was behind U.S. President Donald Trump’s recent allegation of Christian genocide in Nigeria.
Speaking on Channels Television’s breakfast show on Friday, Momodu described those blaming the opposition as “people who have run out of ideas.”
“Anyone who sees opposition behind this is simply showing they’ve run out of ideas,” Momodu said. “The opposition that is just trying to reorganize itself now has time to go to Washington? Come on.”
His comments come in response to FCT Minister Nyesom Wike’s earlier statement accusing opposition figures of instigating Trump’s comments for political gain. Wike had described the move as “politics taken too far,” alleging it was a ploy to divide the country ahead of 2027.
But Momodu dismissed that argument, urging President Bola Tinubu’s administration to confront the realities of insecurity rather than politicize tragedy.
“If you know Pastor El-Buba in Jos, I’ve been to his church, he has cried out that Christians are being targeted and wiped out,” Momodu said. “He never said Muslims aren’t being killed, but the truth is, life in Nigeria has become so cheap that even when 100 people die, the president can still travel that same night. No empathy, no sympathy.”
He stressed that the insecurity crisis should not be reduced to political blame games, emphasizing that Nigerians of all faiths are being killed, and the government must respond with compassion and decisive action.
