China Backs Tinubu, Condemns U.S. Threats Over Alleged Religious Persecution in Nigeria

The Chinese government has declared its full support for President Bola Tinubu’s administration following threats of military action by U.S. President Donald Trump over alleged persecution of Christians in Nigeria.

Speaking at a press conference on Tuesday, Mao Ning, spokesperson for China’s Foreign Ministry, said Beijing strongly opposes any form of interference in Nigeria’s internal affairs under the guise of religion or human rights.

“As Nigeria’s comprehensive strategic partner, China firmly supports the Nigerian government in leading its people on the development path suited to its national conditions,” Ning stated. “We oppose any country using religion and human rights as an excuse to interfere in others’ internal affairs or to threaten them with sanctions or force.”

President Tinubu’s media aide, Bayo Onanuga, shared China’s response on X, reaffirming that Nigeria practices religious freedom and has no record of persecution against any group.
