Christian genocide: Muslim lives matter too – Onanuga tells Trump’s govt for declaring Nigeria country of particular concern
Presidential media aide, Bayo Onanuga, has responded to comments by US Secretary of State, Marco Rubio, over alleged genocide against Christians in Nigeria, insisting that the claims are exaggerated.
Rubio had reacted to former US President Donald Trump’s decision to designate Nigeria as a “Country of Particular Concern,” citing what he described as the “slaughter of thousands of Christians by radical Islamists and Fulani militias.”
In reaction via X on Saturday, Onanuga countered the narrative, stating, “Secretary Rubio, Muslim lives matter too.” He dismissed the claim of a Christian genocide as a “gross exaggeration,” explaining that Nigeria faces sporadic attacks from bandits and terrorists that target both Christians and Muslims indiscriminately.
Onanuga added that what Nigeria needs from the United States is “military support to fight violent extremists, not a designation as a nation of particular concern.”
