ASUU: Nigerian govt releases N2.3bn to universities

The Federal Government has released ₦2.31 billion to federal universities to settle outstanding arrears owed to both academic and non-academic staff.

In a statement on Thursday, the Personal Assistant on Special Duties to the President, Kamorudeen Yusuf, quoted the Minister of Education, Dr. Tunji Alausa, as saying that the funds were processed through the Office of the Accountant-General of the Federation and that payments would commence immediately.

Alausa reiterated President Bola Tinubu’s commitment to transparent, long-term reforms that ensure staff welfare and financial stability in the education sector. He added that the administration is finalising the release of third-party deductions and pension remittances to the Nigerian University Pension Management.

The minister also announced that Earned Academic Allowances (EAA) will be fully incorporated into university salaries by 2026 to guarantee timely and consistent payments. He further noted that funding for the Needs Assessment of Nigerian Universities project has been sustained.

Alausa assured that all ongoing discussions with ASUU and other university unions are being held in good faith, with agreements kept within realistic budgetary limits to maintain stability across the sector.
