Tinubu Removes Maryam Sanda from Presidential Pardon List
President Bola Tinubu has removed Maryam Sanda, sentenced to death in 2020 for killing her husband, Bilyaminu Bello, from the list of individuals granted presidential pardon.
The update was announced on Wednesday in a statement by the President’s Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga. He explained that Tinubu exercised his constitutional powers of mercy under Section 175 of the 1999 Constitution after consultations with the Council of State and public input.
Onanuga said individuals convicted of serious crimes such as murder, kidnapping, drug trafficking, human trafficking, fraud, and illegal firearms possession were excluded from the revised list. He added that others previously listed had their sentences reduced instead of being pardoned outright.
