Release of Nnamdi Kanu will bring peace to South East -Senator Ned Nwoko

Senator Ned Nwoko says lasting peace will remain out of reach in the South-East until the Federal Government addresses what he described as long-standing injustice and marginalisation in the region.

Speaking on Channels TV’s Sunday Politics on October 26, the Delta North lawmaker argued that two major steps would calm the current tensions: the release of detained IPOB leader, Nnamdi Kanu, and the creation of Anioma State to give the South-East six states like other regions.

“The problem in the South-East has to do with perceived injustice by successive governments,” Nwoko said. “Create a new state to make up six, release Nnamdi Kanu, I am almost certain peace will return.”

He maintained that Kanu’s continued detention has fueled anger and insecurity in the region, describing the situation as “unjust.”

Kanu has remained in DSS custody since June 2021 and is currently facing terrorism charges before the Federal High Court in Abuja. Calls for a political resolution to secure his release continue from leaders in the South-East.

On the proposal for Anioma State, Nwoko said the initiative is gaining momentum in the National Assembly, noting that a committee is reviewing several requests for new states, with Anioma among the leading options.
