Tinubu Grants presidential pardon to Maryam Sanda, 174 Others
President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has granted presidential clemency to Maryam Sanda, who was sentenced to death in 2020 for killing her husband, Bilyaminu Bello.
Sanda, 37, was freed after spending nearly seven years at the Suleja Medium Security Custodial Centre, following the recommendation of the Presidential Advisory Committee on the Prerogative of Mercy, led by the Attorney-General of the Federation, Lateef Fagbemi (SAN).
According to presidential aide Bayo Onanuga, the committee cited Sanda’s good behaviour, remorse, and rehabilitation, noting she had become a model inmate. Her family also appealed for her release to enable her care for her two children.
Sanda’s pardon was among 175 granted, including posthumous pardons for Ken Saro-Wiwa, Major General Mamman Vatsa, and Professor Magaji Garba, as part of Tinubu’s broader national unity and justice reform initiative.
