Court Stops PENGASSAN, Others From Cutting Gas Supply To Dangote Refinery
The National Industrial Court in Abuja has stopped the Petroleum & Natural Gas Senior Staff Association of Nigeria (PENGASSAN) from halting crude and gas supply to the Dangote Refinery.
PENGASSAN had directed its branches in major oil and gas companies to cut supply, citing the alleged dismissal of over 800 workers who joined the union. Dangote, however, insists only a small number of staff were affected as part of a safety-related restructuring.
Justice Emmanuel Subilim granted an interim order restraining the union and its affiliates, warning that cutting supply could cause irreparable harm to Nigeria’s energy security. The order, which lasts for seven days, sets the stage for a full hearing on October 13.
The case highlights a tense clash between labour rights and national interest. While PENGASSAN argues for workers’ protection, the refinery is central to Nigeria’s push for self-sufficiency in fuel supply. How the court balances these interests will shape both industrial relations and the country’s energy future.
