Tinubu has no plan to extend tenure beyond 2031 – Presidency replies El-Rufai

The Presidency has dismissed claims that President Bola Tinubu intends to remain in office beyond May 28, 2031, if re-elected in 2027, insisting he is committed to democratic principles.

In a statement by his Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, the Presidency described former Kaduna governor Nasir El-Rufai’s speculation as “baseless and absurd.”

El-Rufai had alleged that Tinubu’s administration was sliding into authoritarianism, likening him to Cameroon’s Paul Biya, who has ruled since 1982.

Responding, the Presidency said such claims were proof that El-Rufai and his allies in the African Democratic Congress (ADC) were frustrated in their bid to unseat Tinubu in 2027, calling the mission “doomed to fail.”

“After reports of the grand reception President Tinubu received in Kaduna last Friday, El-Rufai was clearly surprised by the depth of support the President continues to enjoy in the North. This stands in stark contrast to his narrative that the region has abandoned the President,” the Presidency said.
