No school is allowed to increase school fees without our approval – Kano govt
The Kano State Government has barred private and voluntary schools from increasing tuition fees without official clearance.
Special Adviser to Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf on Private and Voluntary Institutions, Baba Abubakar Umar, announced the directive at a press briefing, stressing that “no school is allowed to increase fees without receiving formal approval from this board, no matter how big that school is.”
According to Umar, any proposed fee adjustment must first be discussed at a Parent-Teacher Association (PTA) meeting involving parents, teachers, government officials, and state PTA representatives. The decision must secure a two-thirds majority and later be approved by the state board. Schools are also required to submit signed minutes of such meetings.
The government also prohibited schools from compelling parents to pay for items such as uniforms, books, extra lessons, development levies, or prize-giving ceremonies, insisting that parents should be free to source them independently.
Umar further warned that unregistered or substandard schools risk closure and prosecution, while urging parents to pay fees promptly and actively participate in PTA meetings to strengthen accountability.
