National Grid collapse: Peter Obi reminds President Tinubu of his promise to not seek a second term if he fails to solve power issues in his first term

Former presidential candidate Peter Obi has reminded President Bola Tinubu of his campaign pledge not to seek re-election if he failed to fix Nigeria’s power challenges within his first term.

In a post on X, Obi criticized the APC-led government for overseeing more grid collapses and power outages than any administration in Nigeria’s history, despite billions of dollars spent on the sector. He noted that while countries like Vietnam, Egypt, and Indonesia have significantly expanded power generation, Nigeria has barely moved from 4,500MW to 5,000MW.

Obi argued that generating at least 10,000MW could boost Nigeria’s GDP by 50%, drive industrial growth, and create millions of jobs. Instead, he said, the government has diverted focus to projects like coastal roads, while businesses shut down and citizens remain in darkness.

He urged the president to prioritize electricity generation and distribution as a foundation for economic growth, especially to support MSMEs, stressing that “a New Nigeria is possible.”
