“Exercise a little, your potbelly won’t fit inside bunker gear – Federal Fire Service advises prospective officers to prioritize fitness and personal health

The Federal Fire Service (FFS) has urged aspiring officers to focus on their fitness and overall well-being while awaiting the release of the recruitment shortlist.

In a notice shared on Tuesday, August 26, 2025, the agency playfully reminded applicants that firefighting is a physically demanding career, stressing the need to stay fit, get enough rest, and maintain healthy eating habits.

“RECRUITMENT NOTICE! Dear Prospective Fire Officers-in-Waiting, While you wait for the shortlist, please take note: * Eat, I say EAT! (Hunger is not part of the training syllabus),” the notice reads.

“Take care of your health (We need fit firefighters, not fainting champions). Sleep well (Counting fire trucks is better than counting sheep).

“Exercise a little (Your potbelly won’t fit inside bunker gear)

“Stay calm (The shortlist is coming—don’t burn yourself out before the fire does)

“Remember, the fire doesn’t wait for the unfit—so prepare well! Good morning.”
