Worsening abductions, killings, Boko Haram’s renewed attacks and others alarming — Sultan of Sokoto laments

The Jama’atu Nasril Islam (JNI), led by the Sultan of Sokoto, has raised alarm over worsening insecurity in Nigeria, citing frequent kidnappings, killings, and a resurgence of Boko Haram activities. In a statement signed by JNI Secretary-General, Prof. Khalid Abubakar Aliyu, the group criticized the Federal Government for its lack of proactive security measures and failure to protect citizens.

JNI specifically condemned the recent killing of Muslim wedding guests in Plateau State, accusing Christian militias of carrying out targeted attacks. They described the incident as “barbaric and premeditated,” referencing a history of similar violence, including the demolition of a mosque in Mangu and stalled efforts to rebuild a central mosque in Langtang North.

The group called for urgent government action, public prosecution of suspects, and compensation for victims. JNI also criticized the Plateau State Government for failing to console grieving families, comparing it unfavorably to Edo State’s response to a similar tragedy. It further accused the Observatory of Religious Freedom in Africa (ORFA) of biased reporting in favor of Christians.

In response, the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) pushed back against JNI’s claims. CAN’s Northern Chairman, Rev. John Hayab, urged both sides to stop the blame game and focus on truth and accountability. He emphasized unity, condemned the Mangu killings, and called for all religious groups to act responsibly in de-escalating tensions.

Both groups remain at odds over the interpretation of recent events, but CAN insists that progress will only come through honest dialogue and collective responsibility.
