Gospel artiste, Timileyin Ajayi sentenced to death by hanging for killing Nasarawa corper
A High Court in Lafia, Nasarawa State, has sentenced gospel singer Oluwatimileyin Ajayi to death by hanging for the murder of his girlfriend, Salome Adaidu.
Ajayi, a 31-year-old, was found guilty of killing the 24-year-old corps member at his residence in Papaladna village, Karshi Development Area. The presiding judge, Justice Simon Aboki, ruled that the prosecution had proven the case beyond reasonable doubt and dismissed Ajayi’s claim that he was unconscious during and after the incident. The judgment was based on Section 221 of the Penal Code of Northern Nigeria, which mandates a death sentence for murder.
Prosecuting counsel Raymond Umaru urged the court to rely on the defendant’s confessional statement (Exhibit L) and other corroborating evidence. Meanwhile, the defense argued that the court should not assign probative value to the exhibits and asked for the defendant’s acquittal. Despite the defense’s plea, the court convicted Ajayi and handed down the death sentence.
