2027: The question of running mate for APC is not yet onboard – Ajibola Basiru states
According to Ajibola Basiru, the National Secretary of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), the selection of President Bola Tinubu’s running mate for the 2027 general election will occur subsequent to the party’s convention, an event typically convened approximately a year prior to the general election.
Basiru also affirmed that “Tinubu enjoys an overwhelming endorsement from party stakeholders to run for re-election in 2027,” though he clarified that “discussions for the choice of his running mate are not on the table yet.”Basiru delivered these remarks during an appearance on Channels Television’s The Morning Brief programme on Friday.
He stated, “As far as we are concerned, the national summit held in the Presidential Villa has endorsed Mr. President based on his track record and a large spectrum of stakeholders in our party have also overwhelmingly given endorsement to Mr. President.”
Furthermore, he added, “The question of running mate is not yet onboard and nobody has come to say that the President has made any adverse decision as regards the present Vice President.”
This commentary follows a recent incident last Sunday, where a meeting of APC North-East stakeholders in Gombe State ended in chaos after APC Vice Chairman (North-East) Mustapha Salihu, endorsed Tinubu for re-election without mentioning Vice President Kashim Shettima.
