Benue Killings: ”Protect your life. Avoid preachers telling you to rely on God for protection” – Nigerian Catholic priest says

Nigerian Catholic priest, Rev. Fr. Angelo Chidi Unegbu, has urged residents of vulnerable communities not to rely solely on spiritual assurances for their safety.

In a Facebook post on Tuesday, June 17, 2025, the priest responded to the recent violent attacks in Benue State, where suspected herdsmen reportedly killed over 200 people in just two days.

Fr. Unegbu advised those under threat to disregard preachers who tell them to depend entirely on divine protection, emphasizing the need for practical measures to safeguard their lives.

“I have seen some posts where preachers are assuring those whose lives and property are being attacked to rely on God for protection,” he wrote.

“According to them, the people should fold their hands and wait for God to miraculously fight for them.

“Of course, your aggressors love such preachers because they are knowingly or unknowingly helping them to achieve their agenda.

“If your life or community is under threat, avoid such posts and preachers.

“Times of insecurity of lives is time to get united irrespective of your religious, denominational or ideologies differences. This is the law of common sense.

“It is the time to strategize and consult. Anyone who advises you otherwise belongs to the camp of the enemy. There is strength in unity.

“In times of insecurity of lives and property, never rely on the “messiah” that does not live in you.

“Does God no longer answer prayers or what is the essence of religious beliefs? We shall answer this question when I return from my break next month. For now protect your life. Ndụ bụ isi.”
